Goodbye, PalmOS
I now own a BlackBerry Pearl. This thing freaking rules. I blame Mark for my purchase. This is being posted from the Pearl, of course. Just because I can.

Sinusitis Sucks
Continuing in my [something] sucks series… Yeah. Got a cold after Vegas. No big deal. As it went away, bad headache showed up. Not like any headache I’ve had before. Different kind of pain, hurts when I stand up or sit down… a little research online and I knew what it was. Regular drugs (Advil, NyQuil, Tylenol) did nothing to help the pain. Just constant pressure for two days. I’m still not sure if it’s infected or just inflammation, but after a trip to the doctor, I’m on this for three days. And Sudafed. Crazy what I have to do to get that, now. First place I went (where I got the antibiotics) didn’t have it. Other than that, not really a hassle, just annoying that I have to swipe my driver’s license and sign. Took an extra ten seconds or so, besides having to go to the counter to get it. Not really a big deal, unless I for some reason needed a lot of it. Hopefully, I won’t need more than the one box. This is the first time I can remember having something like this. It sucks, a lot. Avoid it at all costs. Update: Sudafed seems to have cleared up my nose, but not the pain between my eyes. I have no evidence of this, but I’m gonna go along with Ryan, and somehow blame this whole thing on the Imperial Palace. At least it was cheap.

Cox Sucks
My internet connection has been unreliable since … well, the first time I called them about it was in March. It’s part of the reason I’ve played a whole lot less online poker. Nothing like checkraising the pot with bottom set, and then getting disconnected. (This happened a few weeks ago, but lucky for me the other two players in the pot folded while I was gone.) The problem is not entirely their fault. For most of the time since the first time they looked at it, I’ve been too busy or lazy to press them on it to get it fixed. It disconnects several times a night, but comes back with a simple cable modem power cycle, or just waiting a few minutes. Unlike playing the best solitaire app ever on my phone, it stays out long enough to time me out of a poker hand, or end a Gears of War online co-op game. It sucks. I decided that after Thanksgiving, I would deal with this and really get it fixed. I’m calling them every time it goes out. Now I’m going to post about it every time it goes out. I even gave it a nice new blog category. I was supposed to have a tech come out last week. The only times they had were in the middle of the day during the week, so they said they’d call me before the appointment so I could drive home from work. Then someone called to reschedule, and misunderstood me, apparently, and just canceled the appointment. I called Wednesday about that, and was told someone would call me Thursday to set up a new appointment. No call ever came. I called Friday, and got an appointment set up for Sunday between 2-4 PM. Again, they would call first, as they always do. (I once missed an appointment because I was in the bathroom when they called and it took me 30 minutes to get in touch with someone again through their damn phone menu system, and by then it was too late.) I was home well before 2. I was playing Guitar Hero 2 , but would hear my phone if it rang. Also would have heard my doorbell. Around 3:30 I decided to go wait outside instead. On my door, I found a “sorry we missed you” door tag from Cox. No doorbell, no phone call. I doubt he knocked, I probably would have heard that too. The time written on it was 2:30. I was home the whole time. So I called back, and the guy on the phone couldn’t get in touch with dispatch to get the guy back out to me. Rescheduled again. Except he couldn’t schedule the appointment, so he said he’d have to call me back today. And he did, of course, when I was in the shower. That’s not his fault, and he went ahead and scheduled me for Wednesday between 8-10am. Hopefully, I’ll actually be able to have someone look at my wiring to tell me everything’s fine then. The sad part about all of this is that the technician who comes out won’t be able to do anything. There’s nothing wrong with my house wiring, cable modem, or the tower I’m directly connected to. The problem lies somewhere between my house and where the signal comes from. When I had a tech out in March, he said other people on my block were having the same issue. The guy I spoke to on the phone last night said he referred it to Maintenance, who apparently never did anything about it. So, the tech who comes out Wednesday not only won’t be able to do anything, but likely won’t see any problem. Only if it happens to go out while he’s here… I won’t call them with outages again until after Wednesday. I will be posting here every time I see it go out. On the plus side, it means I’ll be posting several times a day, now. 🙂

Monolingual
To anyone who leaves comments here: I only read and understand English. Comments in Spanish I don’t understand. They will get deleted, as will comments in any language I don’t know. Repeatedly leaving the same comment in a language I don’t understand doesn’t help your case. Calling me a bitch in a language I don’t understand doesn’t either. That is all. Tomorrow: Rant about my ISP!

Opening Day, 2009…
…will be at Citi Field. I can’t wait for the inevitable “Shitty Field” references. They really couldn’t come up with a better name? Hell, CitiBank Stadium would be better. Also, the Mets signed Jose Valentin to a one year deal. Why? I would have liked an upgrade at second. Red Sox won the right to negotiate with Matsuzaka, so he’s out. Looks like it’s Zito or Schmidt, as the Marlins apparently don’t like Milledge, so Dontrelle Willis is out. Relying on John Maine, Mike Pelfry, and Oliver Perez might not be the end of the world. Anyone heard anything about Brian Bannister lately?
More on Voting Machines
http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/001990.php This is just ridiculous. Regardless of who should win or lose, people should be able to vote without worrying about whether or not their vote will count, or even be recorded. These 18,000 votes were, I believe, on touchscreens, with no paper trail. Also, crap like this should be grounds for prison time: http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/001974.php.

Uh… what? Are these people serious?
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/13/AR2006111300924.html Update, from Reason: “This requires no further comment, but I’m wondering why a state so worried about a labor shortage just reaffirmed a ban on cloning.“. Funny. 🙂

Free as a Bird
Guitar Hero II came out on Tuesday. I didn’t get it until today, and for that I blame Amazon. What the hell is point of a preorder if they don’t ship it the day (or day before) it’s released? I coulda just gone to a store to buy it, but didn’t. As it turns out, I wouldn’t have had any time to play until last night anyway, so I just missed out on one day. Unfortunately, the first thing I learned when I put the game in is my wirelessly-modified guitar doesn’t work with it. I’m not sure how or why they did it, as the wireless mod essentially just attaches a wireless adapter to the end of the cable on the regular guitar. Still, none of the fret buttons work correctly. I guess I’m lucky I never got around to making my second guitar wireless, and it worked just fine. So on to the game… my honest initial reaction is: it’s too easy. I skipped Easy and Medium, and jumped straight to Hard. I’ve played GH1 a lot, and there are still several songs on Hard that I can’t beat consistently. I have cleared them all at one time or another, but there are some that will always give me some difficulty. In GH2, I cleared all the songs except one on the first try. Freebird, the last song in the game, took two tries, and it was only because I missed an easy part that would have given me enough Star Power to push through it near the end the first time through. I made it 90% of the way through on my failed attempt. Of course, a lot of the songs I only got three stars, so there’s a lot of room for improvement and replayability, which I will definitely do. I’m sure I will thoroughly enjoy they game on Expert. The setlist is great, and I haven’t even gotten to the bonus songs yet. (I did play Trogdor, though.) I guess this won’t take up nearly as much of my time as I was expecting, though, and I’ll get Gears of War sooner than I planned. Maybe even this weekend. |
